The Northwest Regional Airport Authority is actively pursuing design, development, and funding to improve the community’s airport. In the early 2000’s, TVC saw fewer than 90,000 local passengers. By 2024 we have more than double that amount, with people taking multiple trips adding to the overall passenger count. While tourist travel has been a cornerstone of our economy, TVC currently only serves about 3% of that traffic. This underscores the Airport’s importance as a community asset, contributing over $1 billion to the local economy each year.
The benefits of Cherry Capital Airport extend to our community without imposing taxes on local taxpayers. The terminal addition will also be constructed without local tax dollars. This terminal addition will be funded entirely through FAA grants and the sale of approximately $60 million in bonds, with the Airport Authority responsible for paying the debt.
The airport terminal opened in 2004 and was designed for a maximum of 250,000 to 300,000 passengers annually. In 2023 the airport saw 700,699 passengers going through the terminal. Passenger numbers for 2024 indicate that the total number of passengers will have more than doubled the original planned capacity, hitting 770,000. Currently, the terminal, TSA security areas, baggage claim, and car rental facilities are experiencing considerable crowding. Designed for older regional jets that hold 40-75 passengers, the current terminal struggles to accommodate the increased traffic from newer mainline aircraft. These aircraft in addition to being quieter and more efficient seat between 125 and 200 passengers. So instead of 250 to 400 passengers waiting in the 5-gate terminal holding area in the busy summer season, we can have up to 800 to 1000 passengers in that area at any given time.
